If you are making plans to become a Free School or an Academy you will no doubt be considering the extent of your catchment. Careful definition of your catchment using an accurate analysis tool like mtm’s MANDARIN will be fundamental to your business modelling and not something that you will want to leave to chance.
MANDARIN – market and area intelligence, will calculate the number of children in your proposed catchment in the age groups for your school now and in five and ten years time. The system, which is a bespoke service for schools, has been refined by mtmconsulting over the past 15 years to support its strategic consulting work for schools.

Some schools, like Norwich Free School, which is open approximately 50 weeks of the year, chose the whole of Norfolk for its catchment. Situated near the bus terminus the school serves working parents who travel into Norwich from across the county and The Free School wanted to ensure it appealed to as many working parents as possible. Beccles Free School sought a catchment in the region of a half hour drive time, in order that parents across a rural area have a choice of school in Beccles with a more academic ethos that focuses on the English Baccalaureate.
